Chondrichthyes, on the other hand, including sharks, skates, and rays, have a skeleton that is made of cartilage...

Common Sense

Swimming with sharks is one of the most exiting things I have ever done. It is a feeling of going into another world; their world, and that is what we seem to forget so often. Whenever we enter the water we are in their world, not in ours. We are guests and should behave with the necessary respect...

Biography of Baron Jupp Kerckerinck zur Borg

I was born and raised in an old castle in Germany as the 6th of 8 children. My family dates back to 1264. When I was born, my mother was supposed to receive the Golden Mother Cross from Adolf Hitler for giving birth to six "Arian" children. However, she refused to accept it and she almost ended up in a concentration camp because of "disrespect to the Fuehrer".

I went to school in Germany and spent one year in Minnesota as an exchange student. After school I joined the German Army and after two years I was honorably discharged as a 2nd lieutenant. I learned banking but preferred to start my own advertising agency, which made me enough money to become a race car driver for Abarth and Alfa Romeo. In 1977 I got married and in 1978 we moved to upstate New York where I started the first commercial deer farm in North America - called the Lucky Star Ranch. I met a lot of interesting people in my days from all walks of life. My father always told me: "You have to be able to dance at everybody's wedding" and believe me - I did! I danced with peasants in Germany and attended Ceilidhs in Scotland, barn dances in the US & Canada and Field Days in New Zealand. I have hunted in Africa, the United Kingdom, Denmark, the US and Canada but I lost interest in hunting, when I learned diving. Today I prefer diving with sharks.

When I was three years old I met my grandmother's cousin, a catholic Bishop who publicly denounced the Nazis from the pulpit. His sermons were so powerful and became so famous that the Brits printed them and threw them out of airplanes all over Germany during WWII. At the same time a young man in Poland translated my uncle's sermons into his language and that young man later became Pope John Paul II. I had the great privilege and honor to meet the Holy Father in 2001 at a private audience with friends. We were in his private quarters in the Vatican and I presented him with a book about my uncle, who had been his great idol when he was young. On October 9, 2005 my uncle was beatified at the Vatican. The process was started by the late Pope John Paul II. It was a wonderful celebration and Pope Benedict XVI gave a very touching speech, celebrating his life. I am very glad that I was present.

In 2003, I went on a cage dive with my daughter Philipa to watch Great White Sharks in the Pacific at Isla Guadalupe in Mexico. I was so intrigued by those wonderful animals that I decided to spend a lot of time and effort talking to people about sharks and their senseless slaughter all over the world. They have fascinated me ever since I saw those majestic Great Whites. I have been on more than 100 shark dives and always without cages to show that sharks are not really as dangerous as people think. I went out with Dr. Erich Ritter, one of the most kowledgeable and interesting shark scientists in the world, also one of the nicest guys I have met among shark enthusiasts. I swam with Carribean reef sharks, blacktip sharks, nurse sharks, bull sharks and lemon sharks, hammerheads and my favorites: tiger sharks. It is always an amazing feeling to swim with them and not at all frightening to me.
